  • Overview

    The Intuvo 9000 gas chromatograph (GC) with the 5977B mass spectrometer (MS) system is an innovative new approach to gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection. The gas chromatograph uses a new system of connectors with microfluidics instead of the classic GC column-ferrule system. The Intuvo has a modular flow path with a guard chip technology that acts a pre-column to protect the GC column. Furthermore, the microfluidics system allows the replacement of different GC columns without re-plumbing to the mass spectrometer and without loss of retention time windows, i.e. no trimming of the column is necessary even for complex samples, such as oily-water samples. A new type of rapid heating system replaces the typical GC oven, which reduces the footprint of the GC by approximately half as well as reducing heating and cooling times. Thus, the instrument is ideally suited to laboratory environments where there are many different users and limited bench space, such as the University research laboratory. Here, we examine the use and performance of the Intuvo GC/MS system with a student application of the analysis of hydraulic fracturing water samples. A sample preparation system is used with solid-liquid extraction followed by GC/MS analysis. The presentation will examine guard chip performance, separation of complex hydrocarbon mixtures, mass spectrometer settings, and fingerprinting of oily-water samples associated with hydraulic fracturing.
