    Zika virus has long been known to the emerging pathogen research community, having been first identified in 1947, and yet little research on Zika virus had been conducted prior to the current explosive outbreak. This outbreak has presented a number of surprising concerns in terms of public health and infection control, from the increasingly strong evidence of a causative link to microencephaly, to the possibility for sexual transmission.
