Water is used heavily in the manufacturing and energy generation sectors for process support and cooling. These two uses of water alone account for almost 60% of freshwater withdrawal. Technologies related to water re-usage and treatment are essential not only for conservation, but for profitable and productive use of this scarce resource as total water consumption can be controlled through recirculation. Increasing environmental regulations combined with a limited supply magnify the importance of analytical techniques such as ion chromatography to maximize the efficiency of water usage.
