Overview

Enzymes are exceptional biocatalysts with unparalleled selectivity and rate enhancement. In many cases, enzymes also offer significant advantages over traditional catalysts with respect to cost, safety, and environmental impact. The ability to create novel enzyme functions and properties using protein design and enzyme engineering has matured to the point where the development of new enzyme activity for industrial purposes has become almost routine.

These advancements have made it practical to consider moving beyond the engineering of a single enzyme towards the invention of entirely novel multi-enzyme cascades. These novel pathways could be considered ex vivo metabolic processes; enzyme cascades created and occurring outside the confines of living systems.

In this webinar we will highlight several current examples of our efforts using protein design, directed evolution and machine learning to engineer novel enzyme cascades to synthesize MSD compounds from simple starting materials. The webinar will also give practical examples of how enzyme engineering technology is developed and employed to address challenges encountered in pharmaceutical development and manufacturing with today’s CDMO organizations.

Key Learning Objectives:
  • Technology combinations for the next generation of biocatalysis
  • Strategies for identification and engineering of novel multi-enzyme cascades
  • Modern applications of enzyme engineering to solve challenges in compound synthesis
