Funding for Open Access Publication
The proportion of original research articles being published under an open access license is on the rise, with some estimates suggesting that over 40% of the 2022 literature was published in open access formats. This growth is driven in part by initiatives from research funders and institutions – and this webinar will show you how you can identify the routes to open access publication which might be available to you.
Open Access and International Collaboration
Many research projects within chemistry involve contributions from multiple teams from around the world. These cross-border collaborations bring the strengths of many contributors together, but the complex research funding environment can take authors by surprise when it comes time to publish their results. This webinar will discuss how preprints can help teams establish primacy at early stages of reporting, and demonstrate ways to identify funders’ open access requirements to ensure a smooth publishing journey.
Open Access and Public Access: What are the differences?
Research funders’ public access policies continue to evolve, with recent and upcoming changes to US federal funding agency requirements likely to change the way authors publish their results. This webinar will highlight the key similarities and differences between open access and public access policies, explain how authors can identify which funder requirements apply to their work, and show how to identify which routes to publication comply with those requirements.
Diamond Open Access: How scalable is it?
The diamond open access model – where neither the author nor the reader pays to publish or read original research – is used by just under three-quarters of titles indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals, but publish a significantly lower proportion of open access literature each year. This webinar will explore some of the potential reasons why diamond open access is not more prevalent in chemistry, and what alternatives exist.
Making Open Access More Equitable
Open access is, at its heart, a movement to make more research available without barriers. But there are concerns that the most common approaches to open access – which rely on institutional or grant funding to make research outputs available under an open access license – further entrench some of the historical inequalities within publishing. This session will discuss some of the alternative approaches which aim to make open access more equitable, including lessons learned and potential next steps for the industry.
Zero-Embargo Green Open Access and the Future of Publishing
The 2022 OSTP ‘Nelson Memo’ sets out policy recommendations for federal research funding bodies to update or establish mandatory public access policies. Despite recent legal wrangling, it seems likely that a significant number of researchers in the US – and any teams they collaborate with internationally – will be required comply with zero-embargo green open access requirements for future research projects. This webinar will explore some anticipated impacts from these policies, set out how publishers are responding, and discuss some of the challenges still to be addressed in order to make public access to research outputs a reality.
